Markus Brunnermeier winner of the 2008 Bernácer Prize

The Committee of the 2008 Bernácer Prize has the pleasure of making the following announcement: “The 2008 Bernácer Prize has been awarded to Prof. Markus Brunnermeier (Princeton University) for his important research on explaining the emergence and persistence of asset price bubbles, the causes of liquidity crises in financial markets, and the implications of these phenomena for risk management and for financial regulators".

The Selection Committee is composed by Prof. Lucas Papademos (Chair), Prof. Jordi Galí, Prof. Francesco Giavazzi, Prof. Edward. C. Prescott, Prof. Eduardo Schwartz, Dr. José Viñals, Prof. Charles Wyplosz and Prof. Juan J. Dolado (Secretary).

The 2008 Bernácer Prize will be awarded at a solemn ceremony in Madrid, on June 10, 2009. This year the winner will be given a cash award of 30,000 euros.

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas winner of the 2007 Bernácer Prize

The Committee of the 2007 Bernácer Prize has the pleasure of making the following announcement: “The 2007 Bernácer Prize has been awarded to Prof. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (University of California, Berkeley) for his important research on explaining recent (puzzling) facts in global macroeconomics and finance, evaluating the gains of financial integration and analyzing the importance of precautionary saving in optimal life-cycle models of consumption expenditure in the presence of uncertain labour income”.

Hélène Rey winner of the 2006 Bernácer Prize

The 2006 Bernácer Prize has been awarded to Prof. Hélène Rey (Princeton University) "for her important research on the determinants and consequences of external trade and financial imbalances, the theory of financial crisis and the internationalization of currencies. Her contributions help to improve our understanding of the connections among globalization, exchange rates and external markets". The 2006 Bernácer Prize will be awarded at a solemn ceremony in Madrid, on May 21, 2007. The winner will be given a cash award of 25,000 euros.

The 2005 Bernacer Prize award ceremony

The prize was awarded to Monika Piazzesi at a solemn ceremony in Madrid, on June 1, 2006. Jaime Caruana, Governor of the Bank of handed the laureate a diplome. The winner was given a cash award of 25,000 euros

Monika Piazzesi, winner of the 2005 Bernácer Prize

The Prize Selection Committee has decided that the 2005 Germán Bernácer Prize should be awarded to Monika Piazzesi ( Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago) "for her important research in developing a unified approach that improves our understanding of the connection between asset prices- including bonds, equities and real estate- and the institutional features of monetary policy and the business cycles"

The 2004 Bernacer Prize award ceremony
The prize was awarded to Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe at a solemn ceremony at the Banco de España in Madrid, on June 29, 2005. Read the Introductory speech by Jaime Caruana, Governor of Banco de España. Edward Prescott, co-winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Economics, handed the laureate a diplome and a medal. Read the acceptance speech by Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe. 
The award ceremony was preceded by a conference on "Coping with economic challenges ahead: The role of hours worked. Europe vs US", organized by the OBCE and hosted by Banco de España.

Stephanie Schmitt-Grohé, winner of the 2004 Bernácer Prize
The Selection Committee has decided that the 2004 Bernacer Prize should be awarded to the German economist, Stephanie Schmitt-Grohé "for her important research devoted to developing and applying the tools for evaluation of macroeconomic (fiscal and monetary) stabilization policies in the context of economies subject to nominal and real distortions." The prize will be will be awarded at a solemn ceremony in Madrid, on June 29, 2005. The winner will be given a medal, a personal diploma, and a cash award of 25,000 euros.
